In the year which marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the WMA’s co- founder Alan Bush, the main focus of the opera sessions will be a performance of Alan’s short opera The Press Gang.
This piece affords plenty of singing and acting opportunities for students at all levels, including those who prefer to take part purely as chorus members. Everyone is welcome to enrol in the course irrespective of prior knowledge or experience.
The Press Gang will be presented in the Drama Studio as part of the concert on the final night of the Summer School.
In addition, depending on recruitment to the course, there will be further opportunities for small groups of more confident and experienced students to take part in cameo excerpts from other operas, to be performed as items in the two Student Concerts held on other evenings during the week.
Support in the form of sound files and sheet music for all the selected repertoires will be made accessible in the weeks leading up to the School to enable students to familiarise themselves with the music beforehand.
Finally, and most importantly, past experience suggests that the sessions will be much enjoyed by all of us and will involve nearly as much laughing as singing.
